chosen

For this track, Chosen, we will be looking at Zechariah 13: 8,9.

In the whole land,” declares the Lord, “two-thirds will be struck down and perish; yet one-third will be left in it. This third I will put into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold.

They will call on my name and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.’

On the surface, this can look pretty grim but let’s ponder deeply the majesty of being chosen. We who are so quick to complain about the pain and grieve the costliness of being refined. The bigger picture is, we could have been discarded, judged by God, not worthy of his attention.

Gomer was chosen by the prophet. He didn't’ have to take her back the second time. He stripped her of every asset. Why? To allure her, draw her into the desert to enter into a true covenant with Hosea and God. She was chosen. It is awe to be accepted and purified.

Gideon decided war was the pits but God chose him. He was not pursuing God. The purging was terrifying. The rejection from family, ugly. The foundation of this story is that God chose Gideon while others, he did not.

Eve, blamed for the fall. Immediately after the mess, God chose her. You are going to be my vehicle to crush my enemy. She was not judged and discarded after such a debacle.

Often we do not see the purpose, thinking we are being destroyed not refined. Yet before the fire, there is the fact that we are chosen by the Lord.

a blessing for Chosen

I bless you spirit, adrenals and kidneys with being able to enter into the celebration even when you are in the midst of the fire. I bless you with having the perspective that you are extraordinarily special, the object of his covenant, his deep meditative precision in crafting this refining for you.

I bless you with having dignity to frame this pain of purity that he can celebrate. I bless you with perspective to frame the problem and go through the refining fire without losing your love and your hope.

questions to explore

Having listened to this section, Chosen, what are your thoughts and emotions that bubble up? How do you relate to what is being described?

Celebration, dignity, awe. This IS the bigger picture when we have the right frame. What are some practices you will put in place to move toward a bigger frame?

Can you think of others that were/are chosen by God and who have allowed the refiner's fire to draw them closer to their true selves and to God?

Do you have something to share about this topic?

We would love to hear from you
