Let's look at Habakkuk 3 as we explore the next in our series, Defiance. This chapter gives us an extraordinary understanding of our covenant standing with God. We do not get to his place where Habakkuk now stands by an act of our will. No. We have to do the disciplines. We are largely hearing a conversation between God and his prophet concerning future events. Actually it is not going very well or not according to Habakkuk's plan.
Perhaps this hugely represents our culture and where we are going.
Will you not hear? Will you not save? Why aren't you doing anything about this mess?
Actually I am going to bring discipline to bear. Babylonia will spank my covenant people. Get ready, for that is what I am going to do.
Defiance comes from framing a problem accurately. 'We need help!' is framing it badly. But in the end his spirit trumped his soul. On a physical level, his body was devastated by the news. He was shattered. This was a massive adrenaline overdose.
I heard and my heart pounded, my lips quivered at the sound; decay crept into my bones, and my legs trembled.
Yet his spirit triumphed and his awe of God held the terror at bay. This is a man worth emulating. One who had a keen sense of God. He had enough of a view of the bigness of God to stand down the sheer terror that landed in his soul.
Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come on the nation invading us. Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.
On that day, will we be the heroes or those hiding in terror? Will we be leading the rescue effort? Will we still be standing based on understanding of the God of judgement and restoration?
I bless you spirit with choosing to focus on the timeless essence of God. I bless you spirit with instructing the adrenals and kidneys with the whole movie - God is the God of covenant and because of the covenant he must judge and because of the covenant he will rebuild.
I bless you to rise above our cultural norms by imprinting deeply, profoundly, the covenant nature of God upon our adrenals and kidneys so you can face death with more than white knuckle obedience but with equanimity.
I bless you with a lifestyle of studying the whole cycle of God's love, judgement and restoration so that terror is held at bay by your awe of the God of covenant.
Having listened to this track on Defiance, what are your thoughts and emotions that bubble up? How do you relate to what is being described?
On that day, will we be the heroes or those hiding in terror? Will we be leading the rescue effort? Will we still be standing based on understanding of the God of judgement and restoration? What steps are you taking to get to your desired goal?
We would love to hear from you
