As many of you know, one area of explosive joy for me is found at the
ocean. I have been exploring this for years now, partnering with God to give me
more language for something decades ago I didn't know existed.
There are things that we know. I know that sometime today, I will probably indulge in a mouthful of dark organic chocolate and I will enjoy my joy.
There are things that we know we don't know. I know that no matter how many times I’ve watched my son skate there was no chance I was going to get on a skateboard and know how to skate.
There are things that we don't know that we don't know. I didn't have a clue that my world would shift so incredibly when my spirit met the ocean.
I did not know my spirit resonated to the ocean until I moved to Australia! The ocean is a place of healing, a place I actually feel whole. You have heard of extreme sports? It is a place of extreme worship. The expanse of His nature there is like the height and depth and width and breath we read about in Ephesians 3:18.
I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to apprehend, to grasp, to comprehend how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
That is big. That is overwhelming in its entirety and yet I do not feel small there, on the contrary I feel very connected to His enormity and to His abundance and to his love. It is a place of validation; this is who you are really. When I am feeling lost I remember who I am.
It is a place of belonging.
I was reading a well known text in Romans 8 recently when I was arrested by a new thought. It says in verse 19:
For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.
Can the even bigger picture be that not only did I recognise something outrageous there but in fact creation recognised me? That a child of God was revealed to creation for such a time as this? That is the sense I get. A duality in meeting. A nod of the head in a most reverent way acknowledging one another's presence. What another profound thought to explore.
Another more down to earth bonus at the ocean is the exercise I am practicing of 'enjoying another's joy'. I love kids and there are lots of them that I like to watch. Playing, swimming always laughing or doing something noteworthy of my attention. I especially enjoy watching them with a parent or someone older who is being as goofy as the little one.
There was one granddad that was racing his grandson. Of course he was animated in his slow movements to keep up with this youngster. It was hilarious watching the expressions on both of their faces. What amusement and joy they were bringing one to another. What joy they were bringing to me. (and of course the smaller one wins!)
There are countless ways of can adding joy to our tool kit. So many areas to explore. Perhaps doing something you know you don't like and seeing if there is a connecting point even in this area. Revisiting, because our tastes can and do change. The sky is the limit as is the vastness of the sea!
