When did my people stop naming me?
Naming God is the first component to worship after a victory. Hold that thought, i will come back to it.
In our culture, the whole naming process usually amounts to a few notches above labels to distinguish one person from another. Yes, there are more intentional naming circles, myself for one, who hand picknames with the meaning of that name being an important part of the choosing but in general it may be safe to say that it has all become a poor reflection of the significance of names in the Bible.
In Scripture, a person’s name identified them and stood for something specific. This is especially true of God. Naming carried special significance. It was a sign of authority and power.
Each of the many names of God reveals a different aspect of his many-faceted character. He gives us His personal name for a reason, rather than some generic name from an unreachable sky. He wants a personal relationship with us and his heart is for us to know Him on a "first name basis." He continually tells us to call upon hi name, praise his name, pray in his name, bless in his name, love his name, and proclaim his name to all nations.
'God comes to us saying, “I am”….telling us who He is, so that we will not fear his assistance. He lets us know not only His name, but more also the important aspects of who He is. He assures us of his “qualifications”. He lets us know that He’s been doing this sort of thing for a while. His “been there, done that” is meant to put us at ease. When I am stuck in fear, or any negative emotion, hearing who God is, who my rescuer is… what His name is, and what His experience with situations like mine are- all serve to calm my distress levels. I might still be on the ledge, but my body responds by slightly calming my nerves.' (from The Rescuer by Denesia Christine)
Each victory reveals some faucet of the nature of God. We see this after the Exodus, when Moses led Israel in formal worship. Before the ten plagues, the God of the Hebrews was the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Gradually God revealed one facet after another of His nature to them.
Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:
“I will sing to the Lord.
He has won a glorious victory.
He has thrown horses and their riders into the sea.
The Lord is my strength and my song.
He is my Savior.
This is my God, and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will honor him.
The Lord is a warrior!
The Lord is his name.
There is nothing like it when a break-through comes or when God suddenly moves. Celebrating more freedom is a worth while thing to do! But let's not stop there. The revelation that unfolds the NEW faucet of God's nature is the real treasure.
We can celebrate Abraham's God who provides, Esther's God Who favored her, and Peter's God of second chances.
But who do YOU know? Who do I know? Have you named the God of all YOUR victories or were you just thankful?
So I decided to comb through 2015, naming the God of my victories. My awful year turned into an awe-filled one and a string of pearls were to be found.
My GOD of more full than empty, My God who laughs, frolics and is foot loose and fancy free (as seen at the ocean), My God of NEVER AGAIN!
Let's start a new year revolution whereby we purpose in naming our God and celebrating the new facet of his nature that he is revealing..one step beyond being grateful.
