In this track on Skill, we move to 1 Chronicles 15:22
And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was for song: he instructed about the song, because he was skilful.
We see God giving honour to a choir master, instructed in singing because he was skilful. Having skill captures a huge amount of effort of trial and error. It is a process of improving upon yesterday’s performance- examining what we have done and making course corrections moving toward being skilful and in that place God gets extraordinary pleasure giving us honour for that skill.
Walking in covenant is an art form. Knowing the terms is a task in itself. Each of us is given a facet we are drawn to more than others. Take Arthur Burk in his season of crash and burn, he was faced with the question, Why isn’t Christianity working? Out of that experience he realised the way God designed it was made to work. That has become an anchor point in his relationship with covenant.
"My covenant with God says he did not design a flawed system to resign me to abject futility."
Christianity was made to work and from that place is the necessity to develop skill. From that anchor point Arthur began to search , test, refine, hone principles and the continual art of refining how we weave principles together. Like geometry we pick and choose. Which comes when and where is an art form.
Broadly, covenant is the same for everyone yet for each of us it will be unique. A different sweet spot for each one of us, a different anchor point, a primary interest and frame we use. For Arthur it is design.
Each of us has life to live from our own perspective. The problems, the failures, the stepping stones to higher skill, all gives us honour from God.
I bless you adrenals and kidneys with framing each day accurately. I bless you with looking at the things that didn’t go right, the flow that didn’t happen and recognising what can be improved rather than sitting in judgement and allocating blame which is never your job to do.
I bless you with seeing cause and effect and seeing covenant. What does God want you to refine as you get out of bed and see a new day dawn? Every day comes with a new set of challenges. Can you bring yesterday’s imperfection into alignment with God’s design?
You are working to develop skill in understanding the covenant and weaving together the right set of principles in the right way for each situation you will face on each particular day.
Having listened to this section on Skill, what are your thoughts and emotions that bubble up? How do you relate to what is being described?
All of us have immensely benefitted from Arthur's perspective on design. What is YOUR anchor point and sweet spot regarding covenant?
Looking back, what has God placed in you, a running theme perhaps that points to developing and shaping life through a unique grid and perspective of covenant?
We would love to hear from you
